3 Days in Crested Butte: A Perfect Weekend Itinerary

From cozy coffee shops and legendary pizza to world-class skiing and charming Elk Avenue shopping, here’s how to spend three unforgettable days in Crested Butte, Colorado.

By Lori Stacy

Crested Butte is the kind of town feels real in a way that’s increasingly rare: brightly painted storefronts along Elk Avenue, locally owned shops that haven’t been polished into sameness, and a laid-back friendliness that shows up in small moments, like a quick hello as you pass someone on the street.

It’s beautiful any time of year (the summer wildflowers alone are worth the trip) but winter is when it really shines. The snow-covered mountains, offering winter-sports aplenty, frame the storybook-charming Elk Avenue, making the town feel equal parts lively and cozy. And its decidedly Western-vibe makes Crested Butte a ski town in its own class.

If you’re carving out a long weekend, this three-day plan gives you a little bit of everything: time on the mountain, memorable meals, and just enough wandering to appreciate what makes Crested Butte feel so distinct.

Day 1

Arrival in Gunnison: Gateway to Crested Butte

One of the easiest ways to reach Crested Butte is by flying into Gunnison–Crested Butte Regional Airport, just a scenic 30-minute drive away. Unlike many Colorado ski destinations, there are no treacherous mountain passes to navigate.

With the plentiful free buses to get you where you need to go, a rental car is likely not necessary. Instead, get a shuttle to take you to town. You can get your groceries at Clark’s Market, an easy walk if you’re staying in town.

Where to Stay in Crested Butte

Crested Butte offers several excellent lodging options depending on the experience you’re after.

Ski-in/ski-out hotels like Elevation Hotel and Spa and WestWall Lodge provide convenient access to the mountain. There are also plenty of rental condos on Mount Crested Butte for visitors who want to stay close to the lifts.

My personal preference, though, is staying in the historic town of Crested Butte, within walking distance of Elk Avenue — the colorful main street where most of the town’s restaurants, bars, and boutiques are located.

From town, you can hop on the free ski bus, which runs frequently between town and the mountain throughout the day and evening.

Alpine Getaways offers several rental homes in town. For a true splurge, consider Scarp Ridge Lodge, located just off Elk Avenue in a beautifully restored former saloon. The luxury property features five king bedrooms, a children’s bunkroom, an indoor saltwater pool, two hot tubs, a gym, and oxygen-enhanced air to help with the altitude. A private chef can also prepare meals during your stay. The lodge is part of Eleven Experience, a company known for exceptional adventure properties around the world.

Dinner: Secret Stash Pizza

Our family’s first-night tradition in Crested Butte is dinner at Secret Stash Pizza on Elk Avenue. We start craving it the moment the plane touches down.

The restaurant’s vibe is quirky and eclectic, and the pizza is inventive and memorable.

Start with the Salad Wheel, a DIY salad kit for two that includes a rotating selection of vegetables and toppings. Then order a couple pizzas to share.

My favorites:

  • Booty Call — a meat lover’s dream with three layers of meat and cheese
  • Notorious F.I.G. — a surprisingly delicious mix of cheeses (including bleu cheese), prosciutto, figs and truffle oil

Day 2

Morning Coffee: Camp 4 Coffee

You’ll know you’ve found Camp 4 Coffee when you spot the tiny building just off Elk Avenue decorated with license plates.

Inside, coffee is roasted in small batches and served by friendly baristas who help start the day right. It’s a perfect first stop before heading out for a day in the mountains.

Skiing in Crested Butte (Two Ways)

If you’re visiting in winter, chances are skiing is high on your agenda.

Crested Butte Mountain Resort offers some of the most exciting downhill terrain in Colorado, with runs for everyone from beginners to expert skiers.

But if downhill skiing isn’t your thing, there’s another wonderful option: cross-country skiing.

At Crested Butte Nordic, you can rent equipment and explore an extensive network of scenic Nordic trails. One of the most beautiful routes is Magic Meadows, accessed from the West Side Trails trailhead. The gently rolling trail winds through snowy fields and forests before arriving at a trailside yurt where you can warm up before heading back.

Après Ski: Uley’s Cabin

After a day on the slopes, stop for après ski at Uley’s Cabin, a charming log lodge located at the base of Peanut Run.

The outdoor bar serves craft cocktails, beer, and light bites — perfect for celebrating a great ski day.

The cabin is named after Uley Scheer, a prospector and fur trader who famously crossed the mountains during brutal winters. If he could do that, surely we can handle sipping a cocktail outside in the snow.

Dinner: Soupçon

For a special evening, make reservations at Soupçon, a tiny French bistro tucked down an alley just off Elk Avenue.

The restaurant serves a seasonal prix fixe menu and offers just two seatings per night, so reservations are essential. With limited fine-dining options in town, this intimate restaurant is one of the most sought-after tables in Crested Butte.

Day 3

Breakfast at McGill’s

Cold mountain air and snow sports tend to create hearty appetites.

McGill’s, located on Elk Avenue, delivers with an extensive breakfast menu featuring eggs, omelets, Benedicts, pastries and their famous “scromlettes” — scrambled egg dishes piled over crispy potatoes.

Skip the toast and order one of their mile-high biscuits instead.

Shopping on Elk Avenue

Before leaving town, spend some time exploring Elk Avenue, the colorful main street that gives Crested Butte so much of its personality.

Local businesses line the historic buildings here — you won’t find many chain stores, which is part of the charm.

A few favorites include:

  • RedLine Gallery – showcasing local artists, photography, ceramics and paintings
  • Björkstam Hat Co. – where owner Elle Truax can craft a custom hat (appointments recommended)
  • Favor the Kind – a stylish boutique offering apparel and artisan gifts
  • Pfister’s Handworks – the perfect stop for Crested Butte souvenirs and logo gear

Pick up a memento before heading home — chances are you’ll already be planning your next visit.
