The Prettiest Mahjong Tiles You Can Buy

From colorful, playful designs to chic sets pretty enough to leave on display, these beautiful mahjong tiles make game night even more fun.

By Lori Stacy

There was a time when shopping for mahjong tiles meant choosing among a fairly limited selection of traditional designs (and spending a fortune!). That’s fortunately not the case any more.

Mahjong is having a major moment, and some of the newest tile sets are almost too pretty to play with. You can find sets with tiny macarons, blue-and-white stripes, tortoise shell, florals, fashion illustrations, and even tiles made for book lovers. It’s almost overwhelming! And because a beautiful set of tiles can completely change the look of your mahjong table, choosing a set has become almost as much about personal style as the game itself.

I rounded up some of the prettiest mahjong tiles I could find from Amazon, Etsy, and beyond. Some are sweet and feminine, some are colorful and whimsical, and others have a more sophisticated look. Basically, there’s a set here for every kind of mahjong girl. And of course, since we just know your mahjong group will continue to expand as more of your friends join the fun, it makes sense to have a few sets on hand!

1. Baking Mahjong Tiles

How cute are these? They are just perfect if you love to bake, or as a gift for the baker, hostess, or friend who always arrives with dessert. The traditional suits have been reimagined with tiny chef hats, rolling pins, oven mitts, flowers, and other baking-inspired illustrations in soft pink, blue, green, and yellow. Even the jokers feature little stand mixers. And bonus: They are from Amazon and under $100!

2. Amalfi Lemon Mahjong Tiles

If your dream game night takes place somewhere overlooking the Mediterranean, these are your tiles. Sunny yellow lemons and pale blue stripes give this set a fresh Amalfi Coast feel. I especially love the striped tile backs with the combination of yellow, blue, and white. It the entire set look cheerful and summery even when the tiles are face down.

Pair them with a blue-and-white mat, lemon-print accessories, and a pitcher of limoncello spritzes for an easy Mediterranean-inspired mahjong night.

3. Blue Stripe Mahjong Tiles

One word for these tiles: gorgeous! The pale blue-and-white striped backs have a grandmillennial feel, while the colorful tile faces keep the set from looking too serious. They’re especially pretty paired with hydrangeas, blue-and-white porcelain, rattan, and soft green table linens. You can let your inner Nancy Meyers shine with this set, which will feel right at home with your coastal-style decor.

4. Art Deco Mahjong Tiles

For something a little more sophisticated, this colorful set combines traditional mahjong imagery with a cleaner, more graphic aesthetic. The jewel-toned details and deep blue tile backs give it an almost Art Deco feel. It’s a great choice if you want a set that’s distinctive without being overtly themed. Style these with navy, emerald green, brass, or jewel-toned accessories for a polished game-night table.

5. Book Club Mahjong Tiles

Mahjong night meets book club. (And if you’re like me, your book club and mahjong group is slowly starting to merge anyway!) These tiles feature a charming bookshelf print on the backs, while the fronts retain a more classic mahjong look. They’re whimsical in a way that still feels grown-up—and they’d make an especially fun gift for someone whose two favorite hobbies happen to be reading and mahjong. 🙋‍♀️

You could even build an entire book-club mahjong night around them with cocktails, snacks, and stacks of favorite books incorporated into the table.

6. Coffee & Shopping Mahjong Tiles

These may win the award for the most fun theme. Coffee cups and shopping bags replace traditional imagery, along with macarons, handbags, flowers, and other playful illustrations. It’s essentially a girls’ day translated into a mahjong set. I’d pair these with a dirty soda or coffee bar, plenty of snacks, and a group of friends who appreciate a tile set that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

7. Garden Party Mahjong Tiles

These romantic garden-inspired tiles are made for the floral lover. Roses, teacups, bows, macarons, cakes, and garden scenes decorate the creamy white tiles, while pink edges add just the right amount of color. They’re feminine and detailed without feeling juvenile. These would be gorgeous for a spring garden party or afternoon mahjong luncheon with floral linens, fresh flowers, and pretty glassware.

8. Gatsby Mahjong Tiles

If you prefer something moodier, the Gatsby tiles from Oh My Mahjong (like, the OG in American mahjong tiles) bring a completely different look to the table. Deep greens and crisp whites give the set a polished feel, with whimsical illustrated details that keep it interesting. The darker palette would look especially good against a cream, camel, or dark green mat. This is one I’d choose for fall and winter game nights when the pastels and tropical prints don’t feel quite right.

9. Cowgirl Mahjong Tiles

For Texas game night—or anyone who loves a little Western flair—these cowgirl tiles are hard to resist. Cowboy boots, hats, cacti, flowers, and Western motifs replace the usual imagery in shades of pink, blue, and gold. With the bam tiles being old Western gun images, they’re unabashedly fun and would make an amazing centerpiece for a themed mahjong night. Add margaritas, Tex-Mex, and a colorful table, and the party is practically planned.

10. Paris Mahjong Tiles

These might be the ultimate tiles for the fashion lover. Bows, pearls, handbags, flowers, café scenes, perfume-inspired details, and the Eiffel Tower give the set a decidedly Parisian feel. The pale pink edges are an especially pretty finishing touch.

11. Wood-Tone Mahjong Tiles

For something completely different, these wood-look tiles have a warm, earthy sophistication that stands out from all the colorful sets. The mix of burl-inspired backs, olive green stripes, and botanical motifs gives them an almost midcentury-modern feel. They’re beautiful without being overly feminine and would work particularly well in a more neutral home.

How to Choose a Mahjong Tile Set

Pretty matters—but there are a few practical things to consider before you buy.

If you’re playing American mahjong, make sure you’re purchasing an American mahjong set with the correct number and types of tiles, including jokers. Some beautiful sets you see online are designed for Chinese mahjong and won’t include everything needed for American play.

Also check the tile dimensions. Oversized tiles can be easier to read and especially satisfying to play with, but you’ll want to make sure they work with your racks and the size of your mahjong mat.

And finally, think about how the tiles coordinate with what you already own. A new tile set can give your existing mat, racks, and accessories an entirely different look without requiring you to replace your whole setup.

Which Mahjong Tiles Are the Prettiest?

That may be impossible to answer—which is part of the fun.

For a classic look, I’d choose the Blue Stripe set. For summer, the Amalfi Lemons are hard to beat. Garden Party and Paris are my picks for something feminine and pretty, while Wood Tone feels sophisticated and unexpected.

And if you’re buying for someone else, choose the theme that feels most like her. A set of mahjong tiles that’s perfectly matched to someone’s personality makes a fantastic gift for a mahjong lover.

The bigger problem may be convincing yourself you only need one set.
